NDIS Personal Trainers in Melbourne. A Complete Guide.

NDIS participants can use funding to pay for personal training in Melbourne.

NDIS personal trainers are registered with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). They provide tailored fitness programs and support for people with disabilities. This helps them improve their fitness, confidence, and independence.

Some NDIS challenges we can help with:

Accessibility and Physical Barriers:

Many gyms and parks don’t have much accessibility to accommodate people with disabilities. This is why we offer mobile personal training.

Transportation Issues:

Reaching fitness locations can be difficult due to inadequate public transport. That’s why we coordinate with support workers.

Incorrect Equipment:

Some fitness equipment may not be suitable for individuals with specific limitations or injuries. We make sure we have equipment for everyone.

Information Gaps:

People with disabilities may not up to date with the latest health and fitness advice. We help NDIS participants with education around fitness and nutrition.

Fear of Failure or Injury:

Some clients have concerns about potential injuries. Or that they can’t do some exercises. This can put them off starting.

Low Self-Esteem

People with disabilities may struggle with body image issues. This can impact their motivation to exercise.

Social Isolation:

Limited opportunities for social interaction and peer support can lead to feelings of isolation and discourage participation in fitness activities.

Lack of Motivation:

Some people with disabilities may struggle with motivation and finding the energy to engage in regular physical activity.

Employment statistics show only 47.8% of working-age people with disability are employed, with many facing employment restrictions. Regular exercise can improve work capacity and independence.

What personal trainers do:

NDIS personal trainers create and deliver custom training plans. They are designed for our clients’ unique goals and challenges. It’s a service which matches the NDIS clients’ fitness level. And takes into consideration their disability.

Funding from the NDIS

The NDIS funds personal training services under capacity building and health and wellbeing. Contact us for more details on the specific line item.

The benefits of hiring a personal trainer:

Our clients have dramatically improved fitness levels, strength, and confidence quickly. This improves their abilities to participate in daily tasks.

“Weakened bones, muscles, and ligaments are not inevitable with ageing. The best way to prevent that is exercise. And I’m talking about weight-bearing exercise, so using gravity. Exercise strengthens your bones, ligaments, and muscles, setting you up for a healthier future.”
Dr. Norman Swan, Physician and Journalist

Data from the NDIS Quarterly Report shows that 42% of participants aged 15 years and older reported increased participation in community and social activities after two years in the scheme

The difference between regular trainers and NDIS trainers

NDIS personal trainers require specialized training. They prioritize patience, empathy, and compassion. And they have a passion to motivate and help NDIS participants.

Services we offer:

NDIS Exercise Physiology:

This is a type of exercise coaching which helps clients’ with injuries. If the NDIS client struggles with walking or is wheelchair bound, an exercise physiologist can help.

Exercise Physiology is recognized by the NDIS as a key allied health service. It uses evidence-based exercise interventions to improve physical function, mobility, and overall health for participants with various conditions.

How to become an NDIS Personal Trainer:

The first step is to complete Certificate III and IV in fitness. Or have a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise & Sports Science. Special training in working with people with disabilities is recommended but not mandatory.

It can be challenging but also rewarding to work with NDIS clients. For trainers who are ready and have the skills, it can be a great career much different to regular personal training.
